Helpful Tips for Cleaning Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs can add an absorbing and relaxing ambiance to any home or office spaces. Adding oriental rugs to your home can bridge the gap between a beautiful and sophisticated home and a home that lacks attractiveness and flamboyance.

Oriental rugs are manufactured all around the world and often come in many color variations to match almost any home décor. Once you decide to invest in a few oriental rugs, you’ll probably want to keep them clean and well-maintained.

Cleaning your oriental rugs can take two paths – hiring professional cleaners or taking on the challenge yourself. Either way, keeping them looking fresh and clean is paramount.

Below, we’ll discover some wonderful tips for cleaning oriental rugs. Stay tuned!

Cleaning Oriental Rugs: 3 Amazing Tips

Tip #1 – Treat Stains Immediately!

Cleaning stains as soon as they occur can spare you a lot of future difficulty and headaches. By not allowing the stain to set, you can prevent your oriental rug from permanent damage, which often requires expert cleaning to alleviate the damage.

My recommendation is that you clean your rug at least once per month. Your rug may look clean, but who knows? There might be a lot of dirt hiding in the fibers. Keep in mind that rugs collect dirt from regular everyday use.

Try flipping your rug so that no side is exposed to sun damage and the damage from everyday use. Perform this regularly for the best results.

Tip #2 – Vacuum both sides of the rug

When commencing your cleaning routine, the aim is to get rid of all the loose dirt, grime, and dust that may be present on your rug. First, select a corner of the rug, then use your fist to give it a gentle knock.

If you observe a cloud of dust or dirt arising from the surface, your rug is crying out for a proper cleaning. Thoroughly vacuum both sides of the rug, starting at the top, then flipping it and vacuum the bottom.

Tip #3 – Clean your rug with a mixture of cold water and white vinegar

Method:

  • Create a 3:1 mixture of water and vinegar. Try to limit the amount of vinegar so its scent doesn’t overpower the rug.
  • Combine the mixture in a spray bottle and lightly spray the rug. Make sure you spray evenly and let it dry.

NOTE: Soap and other corrosive chemicals can easily damage oriental rugs because these types of rugs are usually made with vegetable dyes which can easily become discolored.

Verdict

Oriental rugs are ideal for decorating your home or apartment. In fact, their wide variety of color options allows them to match any home décor. Cleaning oriental rugs may require expert cleaning or doing it yourself, but either way, your rugs need to be properly maintained.
