How To Maintain Your Carpet’s Beauty

Carpet soiling – not stains – is probably what irks most homeowners the most about carpets. And for good reason. It’s unsightly and basically, gives off the vibe that the carpet is much older than it seems.

As frustrating as having dirty, worn-out looking carpets can be, such an occurrence is preventable as long as you why it happens.

What Makes Carpets So Susceptible To Dirt

While it is common knowledge that carpet is a fabric, what’s not known to most people is just how much this factors into why and how carpets are so susceptible to aging prematurely.

You see, just like bed sheets and other types of fabric we use in our house, we have to clean the carpets regularly to keep them clean and preserve their beauty. However, since we walk on the carpets a lot, carpets require a different type of cleaning, one that’s a bit more extensive.

Why so?

Again, we go back to the fact that carpets are still fabrics. Yes, carpets are much more durable and are made to last for years, even decades at a time. This, despite being walked on every day. However, know that even just a single square foot of carpet can hold up to as much as 10 pounds of dry soil and still look clean!

The sponge-like nature of carpets is to blame for this, as carpets soak up almost all the dust, dirt, pollen and other contaminants you and your family bring home every day. This also means that carpets do get dirty every day, but most people won’t know because, as explained, carpets have an amazing ability to soak up a lot of dry soil without showing any signs.

This, however, does not mean that you should just let carpets be. This is because once carpets begin to appear soiled, that usually means that it hasn’t been properly taken care of and by then, professional cleaners may have to come back for repeat sessions to restore the carpet’s beauty.

What You Can Do

As a homeowner, one thing that you can do is to vacuum your carpets regularly and treatment spots, as well as stains immediately.

Experts recommend that carpets be vacuumed as regularly as twice or thrice a week for families composed of four people living in an average-sized home. However, those living with children and pets may have to vacuum much more regularly, especially in high-traffic areas.

Spot treatment is also a MUST. Though, you may want to refer to the carpet’s care manual or instructions for this. Similarly, you can call the carpet manufacturer for more information on how to safely spot treat your carpets.

Most important of all, you’ll want to have your carpets cleaned by professionals regularly. It is recommended by the Carpet and Rug Institute that carpets be cleaned by professionals once every two years. Carpet manufacturers too, recommend the same, and on top of this, most manufacturers require carpets to be cleaned by certified professionals for warranty purposes.

Keeping your carpets clean is a never-ending chore, one that will be well worth it once you look at how your carpets are able to remain beautiful many years after being installed.
